Snow Day

The street in the snowThis morning we awoke to the first snow that this area has seen since we've been here. If you look closely at the pictures, you'll see that although the snow was enough to settle, it wasn't enough to cover the grass -- the green seeps through.

This light dusting of white that had disappeared by lunch time was enough for the county's public schools service to close all the public schools in the entire county for the day. The local news teams were also very excited and out in force -- analysing the highways and interstates and desperately hoping against hope that there would be something newsworthy to report.

The back garden in the snowI had a lovely day at home with the girls (Mark had to go to work). Unfortunately, though, they will have to make the missed school day up by going in on a non-school day. Unlike schools in England, the county allocates "make-up" days throughout the year. These are non-school days (holiday/vacation) which can become school days if for any reason school is cancelled. The county are yet to announce when the make-up day for today's "snow day" will be.

The Next Day

We woke up this morning to find that the entire county's schools have had the start of the day delayed by two hours, so the girls get to lounge about watching TV for most of the morning. I've never known such fuss over such little snow. Today is also pyjama day at Lauren's school.

When we first arrive in TX we were bewildered by all the fuss made about a little snow or the prospect of an ice storm. Then when we ventured out on the roads we realised why...TXans don't know how to drive in snow or ice!

The other thing I've noticed is that here in NC, they don't seem to bother with salting the roads.

I agree they don't know how to drive in bad weather. Also, because we don't consistently get snow, it's hard for the officials to justify having and maintaining the salting equipment when they may not use any of it from one year to the next. The population growth in this area also makes it worse. The easy way out is to cancel school.

We have similar big reactions to the snow around here. Because it is so rare in our area it doesn't take much to shut down the entire city. My midwestern friends mocked me when 6 inches of snow (a lot for Seattle) kept the kids out of school for 4 days.

I wish the snow would make its way over here to England. The kids would love a day playing in the snow and a day off school here doesn't have to be paid back!

No Claire, no! I understand we in the UK will be getting some snow soon and not just Scotland. I received some emails from a few friends in Tucson, AZ, who said they'd got snow. Even sent some pictures to show me. I always used to think that the Americans coped well with the onset of snow.

Hot news from Q: it has snowed in southern England overnight, with more forecast for tonight. There's only an inch and a half in Hampshire, but it makes a change from storm-force winds and driving rain. Actually, the real surprise was that it didn't happen over the weekend when Q was out on a very bleak and wet hill serving Queen and country, and wondering if the trees to which his basha were attached might come crashing down during the howling gales...

Hey
Really enjoying this blog. My husband's company are trying to persuade him to relocate to Wisconsin. With the intial excitement of thinking about life in North America, we're now examining the practicalities. Even better, is the gender disagreement over what exactly we have to worry about

Male concerns - taking over his 42inch TV with surround sound, what car/truck to go for, giving up his MUFC season ticket, lack of European sports coverage and FBI most wanted living in the neighbourhood!

Female concerns - schools, house buying, my job, kids fitting in, missed families, what to take and what to leave and the list goes on.

Still, I found your experiences most helpful and a comfort.

Thanks

Marie
